Yesterday, Australians all around the world celebrated Australia Day, i.e. their National Day. Australia has a fascinating history, and anyone who has met an Aussie knows that Aussies are a fun bunch. I would know; I have lived in Australia for over 10 years! Even if you haven't met an Aussie before, chances are that you are already thinking about personalities like Kyle Sandilands and the late Steve Irwin, celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, artists like Kylie Minogue and Peter Allen, phrases like "G'Day mate!" and "shrimp on the barbie", songs like "A Land Down Under" and "I still call Australia Home", and places like Bondi and the Gold Coast.

These images come to my mind...

Greetings Readers! I just wanted to share a short one with you all. Every now and then, I receive tweets that grab a hold of my attention...and yesterday, I received this one:

(a huge JB fan): @bruneitweet can you guys make @justinbieber come here? It's my dream to see him...and I'm trying to chase it.

Of course, the name of the person who sent the tweet has been changed to protect them. My initial reaction was to chuckle when I read the tweet, but after I thought a little more about it, I stopped smiling. Allow me to share a few reasons why this tweet grabbed my attention:

1. My guess is that the tweeter is actually serious about wanting to somehow connect with Mighty JB.

2. I remember what it was like to reeeeeallllly want to somehow connect with someone I admired (remember Winnie from The Wonder Years anyone?).

3. Two days ago, I sent out a similar tweet:

BruneiTweet: Would love to chat and have a drink with @richardbranson. I'll find a way to make it happen.

So, dear "a huge JB fan", here's the thing. I don't like being told that I "cannot" do things, but I also don't like making promises I cannot keep. For now, let's keep this one for a revisit at a later date perhaps. I mean, anything is possible, right? And for the rest of us...

Greetings Readers! One of the earliest projects I hosted was a Twitter contest, where I invited tweeps to tweet back photographs to the theme 'Your Brunei'. I also invited a few guest judges to help select the winning photographs, and David Hogan Jr was one of them. David is a travel blogger, his writings are based on his journey through South East Asia, and he is one of the featured blog writers on the Lonely Planet. David is currently hosting a travel competition with pretty sweet prizes - trips to Phuket, Langkawi, Cambodia, cash prizes and more!

Check out David's website for more details. All the best!

About the Editor

new about me profI am a born and bred Bruneian who lived and worked in Australia for over 10 years. I am now based in Brunei. Having spent time away from Brunei, I have learnt that, to know a country is to know the people. To truly appreciate a new place is to see it through their eyes, to listen to their stories, to taste, smell, do and feel as they do.

Everyone has a Story, and this blog - Projek Brunei, features the stories, music, photography and art of locals and of people who have lived or worked in Brunei before. Join me on this project, a project to discover and rediscover this country they call the Abode of Peace, the Heart of Borneo, this place they call the Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures...through the stories of the People.

You may know me by my online moniker, @BruneiTweet. I created BruneiTweet in 2009, and currently (October 2016), I have over 30,000 followers. I am passionate about community, and use social media to connect with people - both on and offline.

I have an MBA, a keen interest in business-development and marketing, and I am a three-time TEDx speaker. I believe in the power of social media and collaboration. I have worked alongside corporate organisations on various community projects. Some highlights from my journey to date: In 2011, I co-organised Twestival Brunei to raise awareness and funds for Brunei’s Child Development Centre. That year I also organised Convergence, Brunei’s first youth led leadership forum. In 2012, I co-organised Movember to raise awareness on men's health issues. In 2013, I participated at various forums including Brunei's National Environment Conference and the ASEAN Social Media Exchange in Thailand. In 2014, I was selected to represent Brunei at the Australia-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Programme. In 2015, I was involved as a panel moderator in an International Women's Day event, and was invited to speak at the Green Leaders Eco-Camp in Brunei about using social media with purpose.

But enough about me.
