Rediscover Brunei Darussalam through the eyes of the People

Friday, 25 March 2011 14:19

Greetings Readers! Much much much to share about last night's Twestival! Stay tuned!

The iCentre, working with RIPAS' Blood Donation Centre, hosted a Blood Donation Drive on the morning of Thursday 24th March 2011. At that point, we had done all that we could have for Twestival Brunei, so I figured I would go along to the Drive and participate in the donation. I did a bit of a read up on blood donation, and I found out that a single donation can save the lives of up to three patients in need. These may be cancer patients, victims of accidents, people with chronic illnesses, etc. Sure, we can give of our time and money to different things, but there is nothing quite like donating blood to help others.

How long does it take, and what does it feel like? Well, including paperwork, a blood test and a health screening, the entire process took about 45 minutes. And asides from the initial needle prick, the only thing that I felt was the pressure from the arm-cuff.

If you are able and eligible, I encourage you to give of yourself and help save a life.

Screening paperwork - all those ticks are for 'No' by the way...

I asked this gentleman why he was donating. "I want to help"

Greetings Readers! In about 24 hours, Twestival Brunei will be live at Swensen's @ The Mall, Gadong! In case you have not yet heard about the Twestival or are wondering what Twestival is about, read up on it here. There will be a Man vs Food contest as well - The Huge Swensen's Challenge. The idea is that there will be four teams of two's vs Swensen's Giant Earthquake (i.e. one Earthquake per group...of course), and a time-limit. The first team to finish the Giant dessert dish wins! Cost per team is $25 with proceeds going to Twestival Brunei's Child Development Centre fund. So, find a partner and be there at Swensen's at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, 24th March 2011 to register your team! EPIC!

Additionally, I will be sponsoring two teams to take part in The Huge Swensen's Challenge. All you need to do to be part of the runnings is to tell me which ONE of the following 26 Swensen's ice-cream flavours is your favourite AND why. Tweet back your responses to me @BruneiTweet, and of course, points will go to the most creative answers. I will be in touch with the winners shortly. All that will be left for you to do is to show up!

Big Love!

About the Editor

new about me profI am a born and bred Bruneian who lived and worked in Australia for over 10 years. I am now based in Brunei. Having spent time away from Brunei, I have learnt that, to know a country is to know the people. To truly appreciate a new place is to see it through their eyes, to listen to their stories, to taste, smell, do and feel as they do.

Everyone has a Story, and this blog - Projek Brunei, features the stories, music, photography and art of locals and of people who have lived or worked in Brunei before. Join me on this project, a project to discover and rediscover this country they call the Abode of Peace, the Heart of Borneo, this place they call the Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures...through the stories of the People.

You may know me by my online moniker, @BruneiTweet. I created BruneiTweet in 2009, and currently (October 2016), I have over 30,000 followers. I am passionate about community, and use social media to connect with people - both on and offline.

I have an MBA, a keen interest in business-development and marketing, and I am a three-time TEDx speaker. I believe in the power of social media and collaboration. I have worked alongside corporate organisations on various community projects. Some highlights from my journey to date: In 2011, I co-organised Twestival Brunei to raise awareness and funds for Brunei’s Child Development Centre. That year I also organised Convergence, Brunei’s first youth led leadership forum. In 2012, I co-organised Movember to raise awareness on men's health issues. In 2013, I participated at various forums including Brunei's National Environment Conference and the ASEAN Social Media Exchange in Thailand. In 2014, I was selected to represent Brunei at the Australia-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Programme. In 2015, I was involved as a panel moderator in an International Women's Day event, and was invited to speak at the Green Leaders Eco-Camp in Brunei about using social media with purpose.
But enough about me.
