Guest Blog Post: SMARTER Race and Bazaar by UBDFM

Editor's Note: My first feature of 2011 was about UBDFM, The Station for the Next Generation. I finally got to meet the wonderful people behind UBDFM in March 2011 at the pre-Twestival dinner at Kitaro Japanese Restaurant. They then co-hosted the Twestival main-event and ever since, we have developed a friendship. I was unable to attend their SMARTER Bazaar and Race at the end of March 2011, but they have kindly contributed a guest blog post about the event.

UBDfm organized the SMARTER Bazaar and race in collaboration with SMARTER Brunei on 25th March 2011 to 27th March 2011. The main objectives were to raise awareness about autism in Brunei, to expose our undergraduates to ways in which they can help the society, and to raise local awareness and funds for SMARTER.

The idea to help out with the raising of funds for SMARTER Brunei came up last year. Rebecca Elicay proposed the SMARTER Race, and was the first to come up with the paperwork. Along the preparations, a SMARTER Bazaar was also proposed and project leaders included Jazmi Kamel, the Assistant head of Marketing for UBDfm, DJ Rara andthe president of UVC (UBD Volunteering and Charity Club).

Fast food outlets like Jollibee and KFC were present at the UBD Sports Complex, and volunteers from Institute Technology Brunei (ITB) assisted by creating obstacles for the SMARTER race. The first aid team from the Institute of Health Sciences, the Setia Protective Centre, the Accident and Emergency Ward (RIPAS), and the trafficdepartment (Royal Brunei Police Force) were also present to ensure safety throughout the course of the bazaar and race.

The SMARTER race was one of the highlights across the bazaar. 25 teams (i.e. four members each) happily participated in exciting obstacles - the PARKOUR Challenge, the Ping Pong club's obstacle, the Scouts challenge,  and the 'Build a home for a hobo' challenge just to name a few. The kids from SMARTER Brunei also performed a few musical numbers, including Ne-Yo's One In A Million and songs by Michael Jackson. Also, the bazaar saw the UBD Choir Club, and a number of other local artists perform including Hill Zaini, Kamaloco, A Band Once, Rika, and The Kidney Farm.
