Meet Jacqueline, the sassy stylist behind Bajoo Boutique

Bajoo_ProfileWhat do you do?

First off, I am not a designer, if anything I am closer to being more of a stylist.

I help clients create a style for their outfits by listening to what they like. Sometimes I help with minimal tweaking and suggest added embellishments to the designs hence turning it to unique pieces in their own right that would reflect the personalities of their owners.

I also manage a team of in house tailors and run a boutique. Bajoo Boutique & Tailoring.

Describe yourself in a few words.

Sassy, strong willed and definitely a Perfectionist.

What made me go into the ‘fashion business’ - An opportunity to turn my favorite childhood hobby into a job came my way and I simply could not refuse! Almost every girl I know would raid her mother or elder sister’s wardrobe and play dress up. My mom has been a big influence on me and her innate style and knowledge of just what works has helped guide my choices till now. I have been lucky enough to be trusted with helping others with their own wardrobe. It is a challenge I look forward to everyday.

Tell us about Bajoo Boutique.

Bajoo has been around for more than 17 years. We started off just as a small tailoring business. Only recently have we rebranded to what you see today. There are two faces to this business; first and foremost we are a tailor who can make anything from casual maxi dresses to elaborate evening gowns. The other part of our business is the recently added boutique where we carry a range of fabrics and ready to wear outfits.

Currently we carry casual wear, work attire, evening wear and a cute collection for the kids (ranging from babies to five year olds at the moment). In addition we also hold some one off pieces that have been made in-house. We welcome anybody who enjoys fashion at affordable prices.

Good range

In a few words, tell us about the Bajoo brand.

Bajoo is about making the ordinary extraordinary while balancing high fashion with our clients' personal taste. The Bajoo name is synonymous with custom made. We believe that fashion does not have to be expensive.

Describe the Bajoo customer.

She believes that a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous (Coco Chanel).

Any thoughts of women's fashion in Brunei.

I like to say its 'progressive' but just to be safe, I will stick to 'sexy in a conservative way'. As more and more people return from living overseas, they bring their own style as influenced by the country they have been living in. This brings with it all sorts of exciting ideas.

Which brands inspire the Bajoo brand?

Previously as just a tailoring business batik fabrics was our main inspiration, now after the rebranding we draw inspiration from people like Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez; and various Australian labels such as CUE, SABA and Alannah Hill. A big inspiration for me personally is Abigail Lorick whose designs  can be seen on the hit tv series gossip girl. The party dresses and ladylike pencil skirts are the epitome of high society style from the show and are easily workable in real life, too.

What would you say is your flagship product? What are your most popular items?

Our most popular item would have to be our casual jackets followed by our accessories, handpicked from all over the world.  The jackets are extremely versatile as it smart enough to be worn to work and trendy enough for a night out.

What can customers expect from Bajoo this year?

At the moment we are building our small range of in-house designs, which you can find displayed at the boutique. The hari raya rush has also started, so our tailors are juggling their time between client orders and boutique designs.

Where do you see yourself in three years?

I see myself leading two designers and an army of tailors who are able to produce the quality expected by our patrons. I also see a whole store full of our creations.

Editor's Note: I have been back in Brunei for nearly five months. It is interesting to meet many people who were once outside of Brunei now back in the motherland. Jacqueline Cheong, General Manager of Bajoo Boutique & Tailoring is one of them. I had the privilege of getting to know Jacqueline while I was in Australia. "Oh, so where are you from?" ... "What? Brunei? Me too!" Small world.

I like what Jacqueline said about women's fashion in Brunei: "As more and more people return from living overseas, they bring their own style as influenced by the country they have been living in." Perhaps this can be said about many other facets of society as well be it music, photography, art, food, innovation or culture.

Asides from high fashion women's apparel and accessories, they also stock a good range for children. Find out more of Bajoo Boutique & Tailoring on their Facebook page.
